When we tell people about our tribes, the first thing we hear is “yaaassss”. And then the second is “so why not liquid?”. And we get it. We’re so used to liquid foundations that the elusive powdery texture of mineral foundation can seem strange at first. We’ve heard all the questions like: How does it work? Will I really get full coverage? Is it really all natural? Well, it’s easy, yes you can, and yes it is :). But, in case that’s not enough to convince you, here are our seven real life reasons why we think you should give mineral foundation a try.
It’s a truly natural form of makeup. At it’s core, all mineral foundation is composed of a blend of simple ingredients that come straight from the earth. For us, we focused on using pigment rich iron oxides for our Mélanine Riche foundation line.
It provides natural sun protection. While there’s some truth to the phrase “black don’t crack” that doesn’t mean you don’t need protection. While we definitely recommend applying a good sunscreen before you leave the house, the minerals found in mineral foundation are natural filters of both UVA and UVB sun rays.
Allows effortless buildable coverage. Mineral foundation is known for providing coverage like no other. Good mineral foundations like our Mélanine Riche line, leave out all the extra fillers and concentrate simply on pigment and smooth feel. This helps mineral foundation give you fuller, buildable coverage that doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles and feels like a second skin.
It’s non-comedogenic. Have you ever wondered why mineral foundation seems to work so well across skin types even sensitive and acne prone? Well that’s because a good mineral foundation doesn’t clog pores or cause breakouts.
It has a long shelf life. Whether or not we follow the rules, makeup has an expiration date. And if you’re using a chemical based liquid foundation, you should be replacing it every six months or so. Since mineral foundation is natural, doesn’t have any harmful chemicals, and has no need for preservatives, it doesn’t have the traditional foundation to breed bacteria. Your mineral foundation can technically last forever but because of makeup brushes and daily application 18 months to two years is recommended. That’s 3x longer that traditional makeup!
It’s lightweight. Unlike liquid foundation that is packed with heavy ingredients or even other mineral makeup brands that use fillers like talc, our mineral foundation is super light making it great for those days where you’ll be out and about for hours.
It’s perfect for all skin types. Okay, so we know we mentioned this before but mineral foundation works no matter your skin type. And our Mélanine Riche Foundation, in particular, works for all skin tones too! We offer 15 shades so you can find your perfect match, every time.
The holidays are upon us and we are totally here for everything this season has to offer. Whether that means stocking up on Patti Pies, indulging in pumpkin spice everything, Christmas music on repeat, holiday travel, or shopping of course. However, although the most wonderful time of the year is festive it can also be a bit stressful if we’re not careful. That’s why we stand by making self-care a must during this celebratory (but sometimes taxing) season.
Here are a few self-care rituals that are truly helping me survive this holiday season:
Baths: I swear by this simple self-care ritual. Every night at 8:30pm I light several candles, sit in my empty tub, let it fill up with warm water, and listen to music ranging from Tosha Cobbs to Solange to Sade. I find that sitting in the tub and allowing it to fill with me in it makes the water the perfect temperature. I lie back and exhale after an always long and busy day. No epsom salt, no soaks, sometimes just warm water is enough. And it’s something about those candles that just make me feel so at ease.
Massage: Before I began getting massages I would go to the chiropractor pretty often and it helped a lot but it just seemed a bit harsh with all the popping and snapping. So I decided to book a deep tissue massage and it literally changed my life. Waking up in the morning with a sore neck and back were becoming my daily routine. After receiving a deep tissue massage I woke up the next morning feeling like a 15 year old! I go once a month and it is fabulous. I’m even thinking of going twice a month because it’s that good.
Facials: Most women think of facials as a bit of an after thought, but after getting my first one, it is another self care ritual that I stand by. It rejuvenated my face in a way that I’ve never experienced before. It was so good I found myself staring at my reflection for a full 15 minutes marveling at the results. If you can’t get to a salon, a good facial mask that you can do weekly is a great option.
Exercise: Yes, I know, it doesn’t sound as glamourous as soothing baths, massages, and facials but, exercise is absolutely necessary for a healthy self-care routine. Any form of exercise whether it’s kemetic yoga, high intensity interval training, cross-fit, running, swimming, tennis, or just plain walking, all help your body to rejuvenate and help you to look and feel your best.
Detox: Detoxing your body is an amazing way to reboot after indulging in all the rich and delicious foods that consume the holidays. Detoxing via juicing or teas will have your skin glowing and flowing.
Self-care is so super important all year round but, it’s especially necessary during the holiday season. So many of us have our family and friends depending on us to whip up fabulous dinner and our own personal desires to get our loved ones the best gifts it’s important to take care of you. Making self-care a daily ritual can help with feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and even sick. Trust me you’re worth it.
What are some of your self-care rituals during the holidays and beyond? Let us know in comments!
With the rise of websites like Black Minimalist, TV shows like Tiny House, and social media accounts like afrominimalist which showcase how us brown folk do minimalism, it’s becoming obvious that this isn’t a trend that’s going away. Minimalism is a lifestyle. Gone are the days when we were all about adding more to our already hectic lives. We’re now practicing intention, doing more with less, growing our own food, downsizing our homes and closets, and simply doing all the things that helps us slow down and refocus on the things that really matter.
Instead of looking at minimalism through a lens of restriction, we like to think about it as a form of luxury. Practicing minimalism can give you the time and space to explore the things the things that mean the most to you.
Minimalism isn’t boring, it’s luxurious.
So how do you trim the fat and still live a luxurious life? You cut back on day to day things that you don’t need so you can enjoy a trip to Paris, take Kayaking lessons, and buy a road bike to hit the trails in your local park. The way we see having minimalist lifestyle is simply an ode to experiences. Our luxuries lie in the experiences and the space we have to explore them. Because, honestly, how much stuff do you really need? Not to mention, it’s been proven that material possessions doesn’t equate to happiness in one’s life.
I’ve embarked on a minimalist life myself and I’ve found it quite pleasing. Getting rid of my car and expensive rental costs allowed me the freedom to launch 2 businesses, travel often, eat organic, and spend my money supporting fellow women building their dreams. To me that’s winning! Making moments and challenging yourself seems so much better than a closet full of stuff you barely wear anyway. Minimalism as a lifestyle allows you to live an absolute life of luxury because you deliberately choose the specific areas of your life to devout your priceless time and hard earned money and live in those areas to the fullest.
In a nutshell Minimalism is Fabulous! Happy composting, bike riding, carefree living, and lime water drinking. You deserve it.

Okay, so I know I’m not alone in this veggie Thanksgiving life. Cue Shirley Caesar “I got beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, ain’t messing with the lamb, ram, hogs, dogs, chickens turkeys, rabbits! You Name it!”. So many people have decided to become vegetarians for tons of reasons. The first time I decided to eat Thanksgiving as a vegetarian was an amazing experience. Basically, I just ate all the sides. It wasn’t until later that I discovered the wonders of “Tofurkey loafs”. For those who don’t know, that’s a popular dish around Thanksgiving and Christmas which caters to vegans and vegetarians who are want a bit of that turkey texture.
It happened to us the moment we met some odd number of years ago at Temple University. You know that moment you connect with another sista and before you know it you’re finishing each other’s sentences, planning nail salon visits, and gabbing about make-up routines at your favorite restaurant. It’s nothing like having a friend who just GETS YOU. (more…)
